QMUL Offices to Receive New Centralised Recycling Bins

Estates and Facilities will be working to dramatically decrease the amount of waste we send to landfill over the coming years, with an aim to become a zero waste to landfill university by 2017. Currently, around 50% of the waste that QMUL sends to landfill could be recycled.

To achieve this goal, Facilities Services is overhauling its current waste strategy. A large contributor to our low recycling rates is the number of under desk bins we have in our offices. To tackle this, Facilities Services will be introducing new centralised recycling points to your office in coming months. These will replace under desk bins, dramatically refocussing the way that we deal with waste.

The New Centralised Recycling Bins:

The new centralised recycling points will generally consist of a single recycling bin, and a single general waste bin provided per office. Very large offices may have more than one recycling point.

The recycling bin is made from cardboard and is 100% recyclable when it reaches the end of its life.

The general waste bin is made from 100% post-consumer plastics and can be recycled at the end of its life.

The Implementation of Centralised Recycling Points:

The implementation of new centralised recycling points will begin over Christmas 2015 and continue into 2016.

You can expect to receive notification of the change 1 week prior to the change.

Under desk bins will not be emptied by domestic services after the centralised recycling points are implemented. You will be responsible for putting your waste in the appropriate bin provided.

Under desk bins will remain in place for a few weeks before being removed. All bins will be reused in other organisations where possible or recycled back into raw materials.

If your bin is your own property, we ask you to move it to a non-visible location during the change.
