About us

Sustainable Catering and Fairtrade

QMUL is committed to continually providing healthy, socially responsible and environmentally-friendly meal options to students and staff at an affordable price.

QMUL has a Sustainable Catering Policy which is based on the Soil Association requirements and aims to continually improve our sustainable catering performance. This policy commits to:

Sourcing local produce, whereever possible.

Developing menus that reflect seasonal availability of produce.

  • Using free-range eggs.
  • Purchasing MSC certified fish.
  • Offering a variety of Fairtrade items including chocolate, tea, coffee and sugar etc.
  • Providing vegetarian, gluten free and vegan options.

To find out more about the seasonal food on offer at QMUL, please visit the Catering and Hospitality QMUL website, or look at the seasonal menus available at The Curve.

Understanding and managing the impact our activities have on people and on the environment is an essential part of being an ethical and socially responsible institution. Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and Queen Mary Students’ Union (QMSU) therefore commits to supporting, using and promoting Fairtrade. In line with the Environmental Policy, and as part of our commitment to sustainable procurement, QMUL aims to follow the 6 principals of the Fairtrade Foundation.

We are proud to serve lunches and dinners at The Curve to the Bronze catering mark standard. Our breakfasts and our Asian wok counter are not covered by the standard but we are working towards including these in the Bronze standard in the coming months. We will be looking to review our bronze award and looking at working towards the Silver standard in the future. If you have any questions about sustainable catering at QMUL, please do get in touch at sustainability@qmul.ac.uk.
